I can’t wait for AI to take all of our jobs
AI has, and likely will, continue to replace human labor — that said, I am incredibly optimistic on its outcomes.
First, AI will make us more productive.
Worker productivity (as measured by GDP/hour of work) has doubled since 1970.
Since 1970 we’ve had:
ATM’s fire bank tellers
Mobile phones fire telephone operators
Emails fire mailmen
E-commerce fire retail workers
And ride sharing fire taxi drivers
Yet net-net there are twice as many jobs today and those working those jobs are two times as productive.
Second, AI will create new jobs.
Since Chat GPT launched in 2022
263,000 tech workers were laid off in 2023.
50,000 tech workers have been laid off in 2024.
Yet 5 million jobs have been added to the economy.
Technology fires people and technology hires people.
Thankfully (history has proven) it hires more than it fires.
Lastly, AI will create more businesses and business owners.
Today the number of workers (at an S&P 500 company) needed to generate $1M in top line revenue is 2…
(It’s remarkable that with a laptop and an internet connection you and your buddy can be millionaires)
I can’t imagine how tech that automates every business process outside of product/service ideation makes this number bigger.
— If anything it shrinks and the opportunity to start your own thing becomes even more accessible.
Cheers
